Fortunately, once both issues are diagnosed, the treatment is often the same.Psychologists say that one-third to one-half of all people with eating disorders have symptoms of depression or anxiety. In fact, people who have eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, or binge eating disorder, are more likely to have another type of mental disorder than people who don’t. If not depression or anxiety, the problem could be substance abuse or another type of disorder.What isn’t clear is what comes first: Does depression lead to eating disorders or do eating disorders cause depression?Eating Disorders and Depression: What Research ShowsIt’s been difficult for psychologists to learn many answers. Most studies look at people at one point in time and ask if they have an eating disorder or depression, says Suzanne Mazzeo, PhD, associate professor of psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.In a study that Mazzeo conducted, she found that being depressed and not being able to express emotions, along with a family history of eating disorders, could put young women at risk for an eating disorder. But the situation is very complicated. “We need more studies [in which] we look at people over a longer period of time,” Mazzeo says.The Connection Between Eating Disorders and Mood“Mood affects how you eat and how much you eat,” Mazzeo says. Some people don’t eat enough, while others eat too much. Similarly, some have insomnia while others oversleep. And for some, as their mood changes, they have body issues, which can put them at even higher risk for an eating disorder.If you have an eating disorder, watch out for the follow signs of depression. With depression you:Feel persistently sad, anxious, or emptyFeel hopeless or pessimisticFeel guilty, worthless, or helplessAre irritable or restlessAre not interested in things you used to like, including sexFeel tired and don’t have energyHave trouble concentrating, remembering things, or making decisionsHave trouble sleeping or sleep too muchHave lost your appetite or are overeatingHave thought about suicideHave aches and pains, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, or cramps that don’t go away, even with medicationKeep in mind that you don’t have to have all of these symptoms to be depressed; symptoms vary from person to person.Eating Disorder Treatment and Treating DepressionTreatment of depression and eating disorders can overlap, Mazzeo says. Psychologists use cognitive-behavioral therapy for treating depression and eating disorders, which involves changing the way you think about and interpret life events.“That can work because people who are depressed make self-deprecating interpretations of things and people with an eating disorder have a similar internal process,” Mazzeo says.For example, if you walk down the hall at work and someone you know passes without saying hello, you might have a negative thought that can spiral into more global negative thoughts, Mazzeo says. You might go from thinking, “That person doesn’t like me” to “Nobody likes me” to “I don’t have any friends.”For some people, cognitive-behavioral therapy can help turn those negative thoughts around, Mazzeo says, leading you to dismiss what happened in the hall as the person simply didn’t see you. Research has also shown that taking antidepressants can help treat anorexia and bulimia along with depression.
